WWF reports that Russia will create a new 1.5 million Arctic hectare park that will help preserve polar bear.

The park will be located on the northern part of Novaya Zemlya, which is a long island in the Arctic Ocean between the Barents and Kara Seas and is a key habitat for the Barents and KaraSeapolar bear, walrus, wild reindeer and bird populations.

“The only way these Arctic populations are going to survive the ecological havoc caused by global warming is by providing them with enough breathing room.” “If industrial activity is kept far enough from key habitat, the animals have a chance. We also need urgent global action on climate change to ensure that the parks stay cold enough for animals such as polar bears and wild reindeer.” says Neil Hamilton Director of WWF International’s Arctic Programme.

Make sure when you travel that you leave only footprints. And light ones at that!
